Build A Team
A Walkabout Team consists of four or more members who are taking the Wild West MS Walkabout journey together. Team members support each other in their fundraising and training and build lasting memories by sharing this incredible experience. Participating as part of a team is a great way to enhance what is already an incredibly meaningful experience. With the support of your team, training and fundraising are actually easier. Together, as a team, you are a force even greater than what you can accomplish alone. A team multiplies the fun, laughter, and tears you share along the way, and multiplies your impact on the fight against multiple sclerosis. At the bottom of this page you'll find tips on team building, team training and team fundraising.
A team also gives you friends by your side all 50 miles of the event and at night. When you ask friends to join you on a team, ask them to ask others to join as well. Before you know it, that little bit of courage you put into asking someone to join you has grown into five, ten, maybe as many as twenty people who would not otherwise have known about the Walkabout. When you ask for a donation, you may get $50 or $100. When you ask someone to participate as part of your team, you recruit a fundraiser who's going to go out and raise at least $750 for this great cause.
It's easy to register a team for the Walkabout. Just pick a team name and a Team Captain and click here! To encourage teams, there is a discount on the registration fee for team members. Each team member is still required to raise the $750 minimum.
Each time a new member comes on board, make sure they know the team name and that they register a part of your team. Make sure to ask them to recruit one new member and you'll be amazed at how fast your team will grow!
Plan regular training walks for your team and think about ways you can raise funds as a group. Many teams adopt a theme and have team T-Shirts, hats and team banners that they bring to the Walkabout. Even costumes!
How to Build Your Team:
- Ask a friend and start brainstorming.
- Form a team around your family - it's a bonding experience like nothing else. Why not host a family reunion at the Walkabout!
- Start a team with the people in your area or neighborhood. Throw a block party to introduce your neighbors to the Walkabout.
- Create a team at your workplace. Maybe your employer will sponsor you or match donations to the team! Write an article about your team and the Walkabout for your company newsletter, intranet or bulletin board or send a company-wide email.
- Start a team at your church, athletic club, book club or other community organization.
- Write an article about your team for YourHub.com and watch your team grow!
Mix It Up With Your Team's Training Walks:
- Create theme: Crazy hats, crazy socks, red T-Shirts.
- Take a hike and get your feet used to some different terrain.
- Walk in the mall, a museum or at the Botanic Gardens.
- Plan a destination walk to a coffee shop or athletic store like REI.
- End your walk at a swimming pool or with a cook out.
- A scavenger hunt takes some planning but it's a fun option for a longer walk.
Raise Funds As A Group:
- Host a party at a local restaurant. Many will participate by donating a portion of the night's receipts.
- Have a team garage sale or bake sale
- What about a Car Wash?
- Write a team letter to your friends and colleagues
- Set up a table at your local athletic club, coffee shop or grocery store.
